India’s First Engine Less Train – Train 18India’s First Engine Less Train – Train 18 is a semi-high speed train. It’s a Made in India concept. This train is likely to start service by mid of January 2019. Train 18 is currently going through consequent trials. T18 (Train 18) ran at 180 Km/Hour during its trial runs. Now, trails are being done to make it run at a speed of upto 200 Km/Hour.
India’s First Engine Less Train – Train 18, How will it Run without an Engine?
Engineers have come up with a new concept. And, that concept is to install Electric motor in each wagon. This will make each wagon self-propelled. As a result, the Electric multiple units (EMU) were born. EMU replaced SLE (Single Locomotive Engine) unit train system. Self-propelled EMU is the result of betterment in traction (Propulsion by electric motor) & braking system technology. Hence, EMUs are now used extensively in the world.
However, in India, the use of EMU system is limited to Sub-urban rail network & metro rails only. It provides flexibility as only with few switches the direction of the train can be reversed.
India’s First Engine Less Train – Train 18:
This is the first time that railways are coming up with this concept of EMU to long-distance trains with Train 18. Train 18 will save travel time by better acceleration. However, the peak speed will always be Limited by Rail tracks. Indian rail tracks are non-Continuous-Welded-Rails. Hence, the speed of the train can be 160 Km/Hour plus.
Route & Fare of Train 18:
Facility and key features of Train 18:
- Train 18 will be fully air-conditioned
- It will have total 16 chair-car coaches: 2 will be executive chair cars with 56 seats; and, 14 non-executive chair cars with 78 seats.
- Train 18 has a Swanky interior and world-class facility with passenger-friendly amenities. Such as inter-connected fully sealed gangways, automatic doors with retractable footsteps, onboard Wi-Fi and infotainment, GPS-based passenger information system, modular toilets with bio-vacuum systems, halogen-free rubber-on-rubber flooring.
- Not only this but, rotational seats which you can align in the direction of travel (but, this feature is available only in the executive class), roller blinds and diffused LED lighting. And, more importantly, Train 18 will have disabled-friendly toilets.
The biggest advantage of train 18 is that there are no engine reversal requirements. Train 18 allows quick acceleration and deceleration, hence it reduces the travel duration.
