Commissioned in 1632 by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, this is a tomb dedicated to his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Surrounded by crenelated walls, this piece of art is enclosed by gardens along with a mosque inside.
The Taj Mahal, 7th Wonder of World, is also a Symbol of Love:
Shah Jahan decided to build Taj Mahal after the death of his beloved wife in 1631 during delivery of their 14th child, Guahara Begum. The construction began in 1632; and, the sysmbol of Love, the Taj Mahal was ready by 1643. It took five more years to construct the surrounding buildings and the gardens around.
The Taj Mahal, 7th Wonder of World:
Being a UNESCO Heritage Site, the main focal element of Taj Mahal is the Tomb of Mumtaz Mahal. It comprised of a white marble structure standing on a square plinth; while the doorway has arch shape or also known as ‘iwan’ along with a symmetrically shaped building.
The building has a finial and a large dome on the top of it. The base of the structure is a cube which has multiple chambers with chamfered corners that forms an eight sided structure of around 180 ft. Moreover, four minarets are constructed on each corner of the plinth facing the corner of the cube.
While the replica sarcophagi of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan is in the main Chamber, the original graves are at a lower level. The marble dome of a height of 115 ft. that surmounts the tomb is the most remarkable feature of the architecture. Topped with a gilded finial decorated with both Persian and Hindustani elements shows a classic integration of different culture.
The interior of the Taj Mahal is a lapidary of precious and semi-precious stones carved on around an 82ft height of walls. All the windows screens have designs with original jail cut marbles; thus giving a unique direction to the natural light. The surfaces were designed with semi-precious stones forming vines, fruits and flowers.
